“Embracing the ethos ‘Sol omnibus lucet’, our city believes in the principle that the sun shines equally on everyone. This mantra drives us, promoting a spirit of inclusivity, unity, and fairness. Here, every individual is cherished, and everyone is of paramount importance.”

History
Long before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, Soacha was home to indigenous populations during the Herrera Period. Later, it held significance within the Muisca Confederation, an expansive pre-Columbian country of the Muisca people. The leader of Bacatá, known today as Bogotá, exerted his rule over Soacha.
On 15 August 1600, the modern foundation of Soacha was laid. The city came under national spotlight when Luis Carlos Galán, a presidential hopeful, was assassinated there on August 18, 1989, during his campaign trail.
The same year, the tragic bombing of Avianca Flight 203 occurred over Soacha, causing the deaths of all passengers and crew as well as three locals. This heinous act was orchestrated by Medellin Cartel’s chief, Pablo Escobar, in an attempt to eliminate the presidential contender, César Gaviria. Fortunately, Gaviria had changed his travel plans and later became Colombia’s President.
In a disturbing revelation in 2008, the ‘false positives’ scandal unfolded. It was discovered that 22 Soacha inhabitants, who had been lured with job offers, were found dead at a distant location. The military had wrongfully killed them and falsely presented them as insurgents defeated in combat to inflate their combat metrics. Regrettably, similar instances have surfaced across the nation since then.

Geography of the city
Soacha is a city and municipality located in the Cundinamarca department of Colombia, situated in the Altiplano Cundiboyacense, part of the Eastern Andes. Its geospatial location approximately places it at 4.58°N latitude and 74.22°W longitude.
Adjacent to Colombia’s capital, Bogotá, Soacha shares many geographical and urban characteristics with it. The city is located in a mountainous setting, with parts of the Eastern Andes cutting through the region. This gives Soacha varied altitudes and diverse landscapes, with some parts of the municipality located on plateaus and others in valleys.
The Bogotá River, one of the major rivers in the region, flows through Soacha, further shaping its landscape and providing a crucial water source.
Its proximity to Bogotá makes it part of the Bogotá Metropolitan Area, resulting in extensive urban and suburban developments. As a result, while there are some natural and rural areas in Soacha, much of its geography is also shaped by urban expansion, residential areas, and industrial zones. This urban growth, however, has brought challenges, including those related to urban planning, infrastructure, and services for its rapidly growing population.
