History
Between 1998 and 2002, San Vicente del Caguán played a significant role as the center of the demilitarized zone (DMZ). This zone was established as a safe haven for the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) rebels during peace negotiations. Unfortunately, the peace talks came to an abrupt end, leading to the dissolution of the DMZ. One notable event following the cessation of peace talks was the kidnapping of Ingrid Betancourt. Ingrid Betancourt was abducted two days after the termination of the negotiations while entering the former DMZ. This incident added a layer of complexity and tension to the region during a critical period in Colombian history.

San Vicente del Caguán is situated at coordinates 02°06′37″N latitude and 74°06′07″W longitude. The municipality covers a vast area of 17,465 square kilometers (6,743 square miles), with the urban area encompassing 4.86 square kilometers (1.88 square miles). The city has an elevation of 280 meters (920 feet) above sea level. As of the 2018 census, the total population of the municipality and town of San Vicente del Caguán was 50,719, resulting in a relatively low population density of 2.9 people per square kilometer (7.5 people per square mile). The urban area, covering 4.86 square kilometers, had a population of 23,432, with an urban density of 4,800 people per square kilometer (12,000 people per square mile). The expansive geography of San Vicente del Caguán contributes to its lower population density compared to more densely populated urban areas.
